Get Rid Of Dry Skin On Feet With Simple Ingredients In The Kitchen

You know it’s time to care for your feet when you can hear it against your fleece blanket in the night. Yes! At least that’s how I found out that my feet were screaming out to me for help. Most of us use expensive skin care products for the face and hands but often ignore our feet.

The reason that your feet are dry even if you have oily skin on your face is because the skin on your feet does not have any oil glands. Dry skin therefore, is an obvious outcome of this.

A pedicure at the salon sure works wonders, but stepping out to go to the salon every time may not work for everyone. Regular visits to the salon also add up and in the long run can work out to be quite expensive. Speaking of expensive, one must also mention the fact that skin care products are a pocket-burner.​

It can’t be that difficult to take care of your own skin, right? Taking care of your feet shouldn’t be stressful. You don’t need to fret for your feet when your pantry is choc a bloc with ingredients that are great for your skin.​

Of late, DIY skin care has seen a surge. Everyone knows that making your own beauty products is a far better bet than spending money on concoctions that may or may not suit your skin type. As for how to get rid of dry skin on feet, I will show you how easy it is to do this at home.​

Things you will need

1. Baking Soda​

This kitchen ingredient can do more than just help your cake batter rise into a soft and spongy delight. Due to its alkaline properties, it is used for indigestion and acidity of your stomach. But did you know that it’s not just good for your stomach but is also great for your skin?

2. Pumice stone or foot file​


  • Pumice stone comes specifically designed for foot care. They are available as clear stones, on a stick or with a loop for hanging. Avoid natural ones as they can be very harsh on your skin.
  • A cheap, drugstore alternative to a pumice stone, this is a must have product for your skin care set.


  • A pail lying in your house can be used to fill up with water for soaking your feet. But this can a little uncomfortable for some as they are not wide enough.
  • A foot bath might be a better option if you want to place your feet flat while soaking. Since you will be following a regular care routine, it would be good to buy one just for this.


The Banana is a natural skin softener and one of the most easily available fruits in everyone’s pantry.

5. An avocado​


Avocado is good for your health when you eat them in your salads and smoothies. But it is also great for dry skin because it contains a lot of healthy fats and phytonutrients.

6. Petroleum Jelly


Plain petroleum jelly is good enough for moisturizing. However, if you already have a hand and feet lotion at home, you can use it instead.​

1. Prepping the feet

Before you can start removing the dry skin, you should prep your feet. What this means is that you should make the dry skin soft enough to be removed easily. If you try to remove it while it is dry, it can cause irritation and in worst cases even cause bleeding. This in turn can open up areas of the skin and even increase the risk of an infection.

Step 1 – Wash with soapy water

Before you start with soaking your feet, you should clean it thoroughly. Use mild soapy water or your regular soap to remove any dirt. Work up a sudsy lather and rub with your fingers. Ensure that you pay attention to areas such as the space in between the toes, the ankles and the tip of the toes. Finally rinse with water.

Step 2 – Pat dry with a towel

Use a clean towel to pat dry after the wash. Notice any particularly dry areas that you will want to work on when you get to the foot bath.

2. Soak your feet in warm water

It feels so good when you dip your feet in a pail filled with warm water. This is because the warmth improves the blood circulation and also lets you relax. Apart from relaxing your mind, it also loosens up any dead cells on the skin and softens dry or scaly skin.

Step 1 – Fill the pail with lukewarm water

Take the foot bath or the pail and fill it with enough lukewarm water to reach at least up to your ankles.

Step 2 – Dip your feet

Simply dip your feet in the lukewarm water and wait for 10 minutes. Use this time to relax by either reading your favorite book or listening to your favorite songs.

The next step is to use a baking soda bath to soften the skin so that you can remove off the excess dead and dry skin.

Step 1 – Fill you pail with hot water

Add some hot water to the pail as the lukewarm water that you used for soaking your feet would have cooled down. It is fine to re-use the water as you have only used it to soak your clean feet. But if you wish, you can always throw it away and fill your pail with fresh lukewarm water.

Step 2 – Add baking soda

To the water add baking soda and mix it well to dissolve. For about 5 liters of water, use half a cup of baking soda.

Step 3 – Dip your feet in the baking soda bath

Now dip your feet in the baking soda bath and let it soak in it for at least 20 minutes.

4. Scrubbing with pumice stone​

Once you finish soaking the feet in the baking soda bath, the next step is to remove the dry skin.

Step 1 – Exfoliate with pumice stone​

Use your pumice stone to scrub on your feet gently. Go in a circular motion as you clean, making sure you pay attention to your heels and soles. A foot file will come in handy to scrub in between your toes.

Step 2 – Dip your feet

After thoroughly scrubbing your feet, dip them back in the bath to rinse of the dead skin.

Step 3 – Pat dry with a towel​

Pat dry your feet with a clean towel. Now inspect the skin for any particular areas that have stubborn dry skin. This will be taken care of in the next step.

5. Exfoliating with baking soda scrub​

Extreme dry skin can be difficult to just remove using the baking soda bath. A baking soda scrub will deep exfoliate your skin and remove all unwanted dead skin.

Step 1 - Scrub preparation

Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with a little rose water to make a paste. You can also use just plain water instead of rose water. To make it better, add 2 tablespoons of oatmeal and mix well. If you think the oatmeal in your pantry is too rough, you can make it fine by pulsing it in a blender. Do this if you have extremely sensitive skin.

Step 2 - Exfoliation​

Use your fingers to take a little amount of the scrub at a time and gently rub it in a circular motion on the feet. Ensure that you cover all the areas paying special attention to the area between the toes.

You can use a little more pressure while exfoliating the skin around your heels. But take care not to scrub too vigorously on the top of your feet. If you have very sensitive skin, scrubbing too hard on this area can cause rashes or reddening.​

Step 3 - Leave it on

Let the scrub sit on the skin for at least 10 – 15 minutes. Grab your book and sit back for the scrub to do its magic.

Step 4 - Rinse​

Dip your feet in the bath and gently rub to remove the baking soda scrub. You may have to soak it a few minutes as it would be dry.

Step 5 - Scrub with pumice stone

Once again use the pumice stone to gently scrub your feet around to remove all traces of dry skin. Follow this with a rinse in plain water and pat dry with a clean towel.

6. Foot mask​

The foot masks that you buy from the store contain a lot of unwanted chemicals that can be problematic for your skin. But a home-made foot mask with natural fruits such as banana and avocado is so nourishing for your skin. They contain some essential oils, minerals, and vitamins which will make your skin supple.

Step 1 – Prepare the mask

Take a fully ripe banana and a ripe avocado. Blend them together in a blender or simply mash them with your hands into a smooth paste.

Step 2 – Apply the mask

Generously cover your entire foot with the banana-avocado foot mask and leave it on for at least 15 minutes. It’s time to go back to reading your book or wear your earphones.

Step 3 – Rinse

After the 15 minutes wait is over, rinse your feet with plain water or lukewarm water to remove the mask.

Step 4 - Pat dry with a towel

Use a clean towel to dry your feet. Once again check that all areas of your feet are clear of dry skin.

7. Moisturize

Once your skin is free of all the dead cells, it’s time to moisturize your skin. This is because all the soaking and the scrubbing would make your skin prone to more drying. As a general rule, any cleansing routine should be followed by moisturizing.

Step 1 – Apply petroleum jelly

To you dry feet apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly. Make sure that you don’t miss out any spot. You can be generous in areas such as your ankles and the heels.

Step 2 – Cover with cling wrap

Use a piece of cling wrap to completely cover the entire foot. Leave this on for a minimum of 10 minutes. This will help the petroleum jelly to go deep into your skin and moisturize it.

Step 3 –Rub in the moisturizer

Remove the cling wrap and gently massage any excess petroleum jelly till it gets completely absorbed into the skin. If you follow this routine before bed time, wear on a pair of socks and go to bed. You will wake up to baby soft skin in the morning. Finally don’t forget to enjoy your healthy looking skin.

8. Maintenance

This is a great method and works well even if you have extremely dry skin on your feet. This is because the extra exfoliation step with the baking soda helps in removing all dead cells no matter how stubborn they are.

You will see results when you try it the first time itself. But do not just leave it there because, the dry skin can return with a vengeance if you do not care for your feet on a regular basis. That does not mean you repeat the entire procedure. You can simply use the baking water bath and the pumice stone scrub once every two or three weeks.

In case of extreme dry skin, you can add the exfoliation with the scrub and the fruit mask steps.


As you can see, this the easiest and the most cost effective care you can give your feet at the comfort of your home. There are no expensive ingredients and all of them can be easily found in your kitchen. What’s even better, this is not only a cost-effective and a simple method, it is also healthy. As there are no synthetic or harmful chemicals, you can be sure that there will be no side effects or allergic reactions.
